I've been coming here for years (I live about an hour away, but stumbled upon this place due to work travel years ago.been making the yearly trek ever since!). Finding an especially nice specimen is a matter of looking around at different places and checking back often as they get new plant material every week, all season long. I do recommend you check out Lurvey's if you are in the market for plants and trees and compare to other nurserys you like. case of our Japanese maple above, purchasing retail and having Lurvey's deliver and plant the tree would have cost over 3 times as much as my landscaper charged me to purchase at his price, pick up, deliver and plant the tree. In my experience, if you use a landscaper they can save you some money on the purchase price if they wish, and will deliver and plant for much less money Lurvey's. Lurvey's wants 150% of the retail purchase price of a tree to deliver and plant a tree, WAY out of line, but delivery price alone isn't unreasonable. Retail prices are high but not out of line for our area and landscapers get a good discount. We just purchased a very pretty specimen B&B 7' Empire 1 Japanese Red Maple tree from them at a fair price. It is often lightly staffed for the traffic, which is frustrating if you are trying to get help with purchase of a tree, but my wife and I have found nice plant material there. ![]() See store for details on specific container size availability.Lurvey's is a nice nursery with a large selection of plants, trees, other garden items and more. * Not all container sizes may be available at this time. This is a selection of a native North American species. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 80 years or more. It has a high canopy with a typical clearance of 7 feet from the ground, and should not be planted underneath power lines. Red Sunset Red Maple will grow to be about 50 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 40 feet. Red Sunset Red Maple is recommended for the following landscape applications It has no significant negative characteristics. This is a relatively low maintenance tree, and should only be pruned in summer after the leaves have fully developed, as it may 'bleed' sap if pruned in late winter or early spring. Its average texture blends into the landscape, but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition. Red Sunset Red Maple is a deciduous tree with a distinctive and refined pyramidal form. The furrowed silver bark and brick red branches add an interesting dimension to the landscape. The fruit is not ornamentally significant. It features showy red flowers along the branches in early spring before the leaves. The lobed leaves turn an outstanding red in the fall. Red Sunset Red Maple has green foliage which emerges red in spring. ![]() A very desirable cultivar of the red maple with a pronounced pyramidal form and reliable red fall color distinctive form and rich colors make this a choice shade tree, ideal for larger landscapes intolerant of alkaline soils
